The Ohio High School basketball Player of the Year, Phil Hubbard averaged 15.1 points and 11.0 rebounds per game during his freshman season at Michigan. The 6-7 Hubbard teamed up with Rickey Green to power U-M's second-place finish at the NCAA Championship. The center recorded international honors during the summer of 1976 as he played for the gold medal-winning United States squad at the Summer Olympics in Montreal. Hubbard contributed 10 points in the title game against Yugoslavia as the Red, White and Blue posted a perfect 7-0 record. Returning to Michigan in 1976-77, Hubbard shot 55.6 percent from the floor and averaged nearly 20 points per game. His achievements on the court led to his selection as both a first team All-Big Ten pick and first team All-American following his sophomore year. After missing the 1977-78 season due to a knee injury, Hubbard returned to the 1978-79 squad, where he averaged 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Despite having a year of eligibility remaining, Hubbard declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft, where he was selected with the 15th pick by the Detroit Pistons. In August 1979, Hubbard completed his degree in education and embarked on a 10-year NBA career with the Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He retired following the 1989 season with a career scoring average of 10.9 points over 665 games.
