ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of its penalty-corner opportunities to take down Ohio State, 3-0, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 29) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' 14th straight win and 12th shutout of the season – the 11th over their win streak.
With the win, Michigan advanced to face No. 4-seed -- and 10th-ranked -- Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at 11 a.m. next Friday (Nov. 3) at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Michigan. The championship game is slated for noon on Sunday (Nov. 5) on the MSU field.
The Wolverines largely controlled play throughout the contest, outshooting the Buckeyes, 16-4, and outcornering them, 6-1, but struggled to break through until late in the first half, then scored twice in the final 3:30 of play to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Senior Katie Trombetta netted the first and game-winning goal on Michigan's first corner opportunity at the 31:31 mark, burying the direct shot to the left side for her fourth of the season. Sophomore Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort and junior Emma Way earned assists for the stop and insert, respectively.
Michigan struck again just three minutes later, at 34:28, on another corner chance. Trombetta's direct shot was deflected in front by sophomore Fay Keijer and kicked hard toward the right post, where freshman Halle O'Neill spun and, with her back facing the cage, got her stick on it to tip it past Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro. It was her fourth goal of the season.
The Wolverines added one more off the penalty corner in the second half to ice the victory. Freshman Kayla Reed, who missed most of the first half after taking an OSU stick to the face and receiving stitches, extended to get her stick on a Trombetta pass to the right post and redirect it into the Buckeye cage.
Ohio State did not record a shot until the 56th minute of the contest, and three of the Buckeyes' four shots were either wide or blocked, including one off their lone penalty corner in the 61st minute. Senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned a save on a hard shot in the final minute, while the Buckeyes' Tamburro posted seven saves in the OSU cage.
