ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior outside hitter Carly Skjodt of the University of Michigan volleyball team was named to the Academic All-District Five first team, while junior libero Jenna Lerg earned a second-team nod, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday (Nov. 16).
To be eligible, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in his/her second year at the current institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's matches. The selections for District Five include students from Division I programs in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
A 6-foot-1 outside hitter, Skjodt has been instrumental in Michigan's success this season in her role as a six-rotation player. The Indianapolis, Indiana, native leads Michigan with 3.67 kills per set and has posted 20 double-digit kill efforts this season alone for a total of 378 kills on the year. She also ranks second on the team with 2.18 digs per set and led the Wolverines with 17 kills and 12 digs in a 3-0 sweep of No. 8-ranked Michigan State (Nov. 15). Skjodt was one of just seven student-athletes to earn the first-team distinction.
In her role as Michigan's libero, Lerg has anchored the back row for the Wolverines all season and has started and played every set at her position. A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, she leads Michigan with 4.12 digs per set and ranks second on the team with 106 assists. Lerg has recorded 23 double-digit dig efforts this season and has led the Wolverines in digs 24 times. Her season-best performance came in a 3-1 victory over Ohio State (Sept. 29), when she tallied 25 digs. She ranks seventh all-time at Michigan with 1,310 digs to date, and was one of just eight players named to the second team.
The honor is a first for both Skjodt and Lerg. Both student-athletes also earned a selection to the Academic All-Big Ten team in the fall of 2016.
