COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Emma Way knocked in the game-winning goal at the 84:40 -- with just 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime -- to propel the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey to a 1-0 win against rival Ohio State on Friday afternoon (Sept. 22) at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Wolverines improved to 2-0 in Big Ten Conference play.
Sophomore Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort set up the game-winner after a Michigan free hit on the OSU 25, receiving the ball on the left side and splitting two defenders as she dribbled in along the base line. She bounced a goalmouth pass over another defender's stick, and Way tipped it in from out of the air, sending it high into the cage. It was Way's sixth goal of the season, while Fernandez Lacort upped her assist tally to a Big Ten-best eight.
Michigan had to make a defensive stand just to get to overtime, when Ohio State drew four penalty corners in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson posted eight saves to for her third shutout and fourth in six games. She also got some help from her teammates; Way and senior Katie Trombetta both registered defensive saves on late OSU corners.
Michigan outshot the Buckeyes, 14-11, while corners were even, 7-7. Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro made seven saves on eight U-M shots on goal.

Michigan (6-2, 2-0 Big Ten) will wrap the weekend road trip on Sunday (Sept. 24), heading to State College, Pennsylvania, to face No. 3 Penn State at noon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
