ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Former University of Michigan ice hockey head coach Red Berenson has been named the 2018 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation Legend of College Hockey recipient. The award is presented annually to honor all-time great contributors to the game of college hockey.
Berenson, who retired last March after 33 seasons behind the Michigan bench, will be honored with the award on Wednesday, May 28, 2018, in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the annual Hobey Baker Award Banquet. Berenson becomes the third U-M coach to be honored with this achievement, joining Vic Heyliger and Al Renfrew, who received the award in 1982 and 1990, respectively.
Berenson was a two-time All-American as a player at Michigan before a 17-year NHL career that included winning the Stanley Cup as a member of the Montreal Canadiens in 1965 and 1966. After coaching in the NHL for three years, Berenson took over the Michigan program in 1984 and coached the Wolverines to national championships in 1996 and 1998 in addition to 21 conference championships.
Berenson retired from coaching following the 2016-17 season. He continues to serve the department as he works to fulfill his goal of endowing all Michigan Ice Hockey Scholarships. Current financial commitments exceed $20 million.
The 2018 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 6, during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in St. Paul, Minnesota. The awards ceremony will be held at the legendary Roy Wilkens Auditorium in the St. Paul RiverCentre and will be broadcast nationally on NHL Network. Banquet tickets are available by visiting the Hobey website at hobeybaker.com.
