Wolverines Defeat Preseason Favorite No. 6 Ohio State

» The Maize and Blue scored the third-highest team score in the NCAA to defeat rival Ohio State.
» The Wolverines took the top two spots on vault with a first-place finish from junior Emyre Cole (14.300) and a second-place finish from redshirt junior Marty Strech (14.250).

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes 411.850-410.650 on Saturday (Feb. 3) inside Cliff Keen Arena. The team score for the Maize and Blue proved to be the third-highest in the NCAA this season and the second best amongst Big Ten teams.

The Wolverines (1-1) maintained a slim lead through the first four rotations, but pulled ahead to a six-point lead after the fifth rotation and went on to win the rivalry meet. Michigan's final score of 411.850 marks the third-highest team score in the nation so far this season.
U-M started off the day on floor with an impressive score of 71.150. The effort on floor was highlighted with a perfect triple full from freshman Jacob Moore (14.950) to earn the highest score in the country on the event and take the event title.
Moore also took second place on pommel horse (13.850). Fellow freshman Cameron Bock finished second on high bar with a 13.600.
The third rotation on rings proved successful for the Wolverines, scoring a season-high 69.900. Michigan was forced to compete with a limited five-man lineup on the event after losing junior Anthony McCallum to injury in the first event of the meet.
The Maize and Blue also had success on the parallel bars during the fifth rotation, improving on its previous week's score by almost three points (69.050). Junior Emyre Cole took the event title on vault with a 14.300, followed closely by redshirt junior Marty Strech for second place with a mark of 14.250.
Ohio State (0-2) was led by Alec Yoder, who won parallel bars (14.65) and high bar (14.10). The lone all-around competitor in the meet, he compiled a 83.600.

The two-meet homestand now wrapped up, the Wolverines' duo of McCallum and Bock will compete at the USA Gymnastics sponsored Winter Cup Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 15-17 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
