
Marody Headlines Group of Wolverines to Garner Big Ten Hockey Awards

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey junior forward Cooper Marody was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the scoring champion of the Big Ten, leading a group of five Wolverines honored with Big Ten awards as voted by a panel of Big Ten coaches and media, the conference announced Tuesday (March 13).
Senior forward Tony Calderone earned second-team honors along with freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes. In addition, Hughes also was named to the All-Freshman team. Sophomore goalie Hayden Lavigne earned an honorable mention, while Marody was the lone Wolverine named to the first team. Senior Sam Piazza was once again named as a Big Ten Sportsmanship award honoree for the second consecutive season.
Marody had a career regular-season and Big Ten campaign, notching 46 points (14 goals, 32 assist) in 37 games played. His 46 points lead the Big Ten and are tied for ninth in the NCAA and his 32 assists rank tied for third in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten. Marody becomes the third Wolverine to garner the Big Ten scoring title, joining Zach Hyman (2015) and Kyle Connor (2016).Â
Calderone is the top scorer in the Big Ten and ranks tied for eighth in the nation among all players with 23 goals this season. His 40 points, 23 goals and 17 assists are career highs for the U-M captain.
Hughes enjoyed a stellar first season with the Wolverines. His 28 points (4G, 24A) ranked tied for 12th in the NCAA and third in the Big Ten amongst freshmen. Hughes' 24 assists ranked third in the NCAA and first overall in the Big Ten among freshman. Hughes' 24 assists is the most in program history by a freshman defenseman, while his 28 points rank third all-time.
Lavigne played in 30 games for the Wolverines this year as their primary goalie and accumulated over 1,700 minutes. He had an average of 2.79 goals allowed per game and a save percentage of .910. Behind three shutouts, Lavigne also ended the season with a 16-10-3 record. His 16 wins ranked fourth in the Big Ten and his .603 winning percentage ranked third. Lavigne set a career-high with 48 saves in a win over Wisconsin on March 2.
Piazza was recognized as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree which marks the second consecutive year that the defenseman has earned this honor. Piazza set a career high in games played (35), assists (13), points (15) and shots (64) during his senior season for the Wolverines. In addition to his Big Ten sportsmanship award, he was also nominated as a finalist for the Senior CLASS award. This award recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the ice.
Michigan will find out its NCAA tournament fate during Selection Sunday (March 18). NCAA tournament play will begin on March 23.
