
Diver Canale Books Trip to NCAAs on Day Two of Zones

» Freshman Nikki Canale booked her trip to the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place finish on three-meter on Friday. With her addition, Michigan's roster now stands at 13 individual qualifiers.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman Nikki Canale of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place finish on the three-meter springboard on Friday (March 9) at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
With Canale's qualification, Michigan has now sent at least one women's diver to the NCAA Championships in all four years under the direction of coach Mike Hilde. With Ross Todd's qualification on the men's side, this is the first year that Michigan will have men's and women's divers at the NCAA Championships in the same season since 2004.
Canale finished strong in preliminaries, scoring a 59.40 on her final dive to cement her spot in the final. After scoring 271.10 in preliminaries, Canale went 295.50 in finals, with a total of 566.60, fewer than eight points clear of 10th place.
Freshman Christy Cutshaw also made the final, vaulting at least 10 spots in the final two rounds of preliminaries after scoring a 56.00 in round five and a 58.80 in round six.
The NCAA Zone C Diving Championships conclude tomorrow (Saturday, March 10) with platform. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. Cutshaw and senior Dani VanderZwaag -- who has yet to dive at Zones -- can still qualify for the NCAA Championships with a top-10 finish. With her spot already reserved, Canale can add platform to her list at NCAAs with a top-12 finish.
