Late Penalty Kick Lifts Michigan to Victory over Titans
9/17/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It took all afternoon, but the University of Michigan men's soccer team finally seized an opportunity with just half a minute left in regulation to win 1-0 over the visiting Detroit Titans on Sunday (Sept. 17) at Elbel Field. Freshman Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) converted a penalty kick at the 89:30 mark for the victory.
The game was hard fought throughout, with stellar defensive play by Michigan (3-2). Senior Albert Geldres (St. Clair, Mich./Detroit Country Day Prep), who recorded his second shutout of the season, was only tested twice on goal due to the aggressive defensive backfield. The Wolverines limited Detroit (1-4) to six shots (one in the first half) and only two on goal.
The physical play came out right at the start, and the two teams combined for 43 fouls. Michigan's counter-offensive attacks kept the Titans on their heels all afternoon. The Wolverines had a season-high 18 shots for the game, but it wasn't until the last 30 seconds when they would get the break they would need to get on the board with Taylor's game-winning kick.
Michigan returns to Elbel Field next Saturday (Sept. 23) when the Wolverines open up Big Ten Conference play against No. 2 Penn State at 3 p.m.
