Today's attendance of 111,349 is the largest crowd to watch a football game this season and the 197th straight contest that the Michigan Stadium crowd has reached six digits.
Today marked the 99th meeting in the Michigan and Michigan State rivalry. U-M improved to 66-28-5 all-time in the in-state rivalry. The Wolverines earned the Paul Bunyan trophy for the fifth straight season and the 34th time overall.
Today's win gives Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr wins in 26 of his last 30 games at the Big House. He has won 14 of the last 16 Big Ten games at home.
Fifth-year tight end Brian Thompson represented the Wolverines as special teams captain in this evening's contest.
Michigan is 33-16-3 all-time against the Spartans at Michigan Stadium and 33-19-2 in games played for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
U-M held Michigan State scoreless in the first half, marking the first time this season and first time since last season's campaign against Penn State that the Maize and Blue has held its opponent scoreless in the first two quarters.
The Wolverines' final scoring drive of the first half covered 73 yards on 13 plays and elapsed 7:12 off the clock. The drive is Michigan's longest in terms of plays and time so far this season. U-M's previous high came against Central Michigan when it used 12 plays to go 63 yards for the opening score in 5:26. It also marked the fourth time this season that the Wolverines have scored on their opening drive, with all four possessions going for touchdowns.
Michigan has scored first in five out of six games this season.
Michigan State's third-quarter rushing touchdown is the first touchdown allowed on the ground by the Wolverines this season. It came on the 345th offensive play by the opponent and the 134th rushing attempt.
After allowing just 60 yards on the ground, the Wolverines have held their opponent to less than 100 yards rushing in five of six games in 2006.
Michigan scored on the game's opening drive for the fourth time this season. Junior wideout Adrian Arrington has a caught touchdown in each of the past two opening possessions.
In his 30th career and consecutive start, junior quarterback Chad Henne threw three touchdowns, giving him 11 scoring passes in the past four games. He has now passed for a touchdown in 28 of 30 career starts. The junior signal caller surpassed the 1,000-yard passing mark on the season (1,103).
In his three career games against the Spartans, Chad Henne has passed for 10 touchdowns.
Chad Henne has four straight games with multiple touchdown passes and three out of four games with three touchdown scores through the air.
Senior linebacker Prescott Burgess registered a season-high eight tackles, which puts him over 150 for his career (153), and added a career-high two tackles for loss. He has had six or more stops in seven of the past nine contests.
Junior tailback Mike Hart rushed for over 100 yards for the fourth time this season, compiling 122 yards on 22 carries. U-M is 14-1 when Hart rushes for 100 or more yards. He tied Rob Lytle for fifth place on U-M's 100-yard rushing games list (15).
Mike Hart jumped up two spots on U-M's all-time rushing list, finishing the game with 2,911 career yards on the ground. The junior also extended his streak of consecutive touches without a fumble lost to 579.
Adrian Arrington's touchdown reception on the opening drive is his third in the past two games.
Sophomore wideout Mario Manningham's second-quarter touchdown gives him four straight games with a touchdown catch, which matches the fifth-longest streak with a scoring reception in school history. He later added a 27-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to earn his third multiple-touchdown catch game of the season, and third in the last four games.
Mario Manningham's three catches for 75 yards pushes him over 500 receiving yards on the year. He also eclipsed 50 career catches. All nine of his touchdown catches have been for more than 20 yards, including three over 35 yards.
Senior kicker Garrett Rivas connected on a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter to move into third place all-time in the program's career points-scored list. His 311 career points push him past Mike Gillette's 307 and are tops among U-M placekickers.
Fifth-year wideout Steve Breaston became the program's all-time leader in kickoff-return yards after taking two back for 38 yards.
Junior defensive back Jamar Adams recorded his first career interception in the fourth quarter. The turnover was the 12th forced by the Wolverine defense this season.
Freshman tailback Brandon Minor's first career touchdown came on Michigan's longest touchdown rush of the season. The rush covered 40 yards. It is the longest rushing touchdown by a Wolverine tailback since 2003, when B.J. Askew broke off a 59-yard run in a 41-24 win at Minnesota.
Senior defensive back Ryan Mundy notched a career-high eight tackles. He finished in a tie with Prescott Burgess for the team lead.
Senior defensive back Leon Hall's fourth-quarter interception is his second this season and the 11th of his career, which ties him with four other players for fifth place all-time in the category at Michigan. He also tied Marlin Jackson for second place all-time in program history in career pass breakups with 34, and he recovered MSU's onside-kick attempt in the fourth quarter.
