OMAHA, Neb. -- University of Michigan senior outside hitter Katie Bruzdzinski(Naperville, Ill./Naperville) and freshman setter Lexi Zimmerman(Barrington, Ill./Barrington) wrapped up U-M's magical season by earning American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention, announced Wednesday (Dec. 12) by the AVCA.
Bruzdzinski becomes the first Wolverine to receive multiple All-America honorable mention citations in her career, while Zimmerman is just the third Wolverine to advance to the national ballot after earning AVCA All-Mideast Region honors.
Bruzdzinski earns her second AVCA All-America honorable mention award after a career year in which she also picked up her second All-Big Ten honor. In her senior campaign, Bruzdzinski bettered her own U-M single-season kills record (595) and became the program's all-time leader in terminations (1,895). She wraps up her illustrious career tops in kills (1,895) and kill attempts (5,097) and in third place on the all-time digs (1,152) and service aces (177) lists. She finished the regular season leading the Big Ten Conference in aces (0.47) and ranking second in the conference in kills per game (4.68).
Zimmerman broke Michigan's single-season assist record in her freshman campaign with 1,685 helpers and became the first U-M freshman setter to start an NCAA Tournament match. The AVCA Mideast Region Freshman of the Year led the Big Ten in assists the entire season and set the Wolverine attack to one of the top five hitting percentages in the conference. She earned Big Ten All-Freshman team honors and led U-M to its first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance. She is the first U-M freshman ever to earn AVCA regional or national honors.
The Wolverines (24-11, 10-10 Big Ten) concluded their record-setting 2007 season with the program's first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance after tying for fifth place in the Big Ten. The team's 24 wins are the third-most in program history and the most under head coach Mark Rosen. The team reached its highest national ranking (No. 10) and spent every week of the season either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll.
