Madwed Wins Bronze Medal at World University Games

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Two members of the University of Michigan men's swimming team are representing the United States at the 2007 World University Games. Incoming freshman Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson HS) earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly on Thursday (Aug. 9), finishing in 1:57.16, while senior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) finished sixth in the same event (1:58.46). Swimming events continue through Saturday, Aug. 18.
Madwed, who swims for U-M coach Bob Bowman's former club team, the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, also represented the U.S. at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships and was the 2006 U.S. Swimming spring nationals 200-meter butterfly champion.
A co-captain on Michigan's 2006-07 team, Vanderkaay is the reigning 400-yard individual medley NCAA champion and won three Big Ten Conference titles as a junior, in the 400 IM, 200-yard butterfly and 800-yard freestyle relay.
