ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In conjunction with ESPN and the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast conferences, the University of Michigan men's basketball team announced Thursday (June 6) that the Wolverines will have an ACC/Big Ten Challenge road game at Louisville on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the KFC Yum! Center.
The 14-game event will be played over a three-day period -- Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 2-4. All Challenge games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, with TV platforms and times being announced at a later date.
Overall, Michigan has faced Louisville on four other occasions and holds a 1-3 record. The series began with a home-and-home matchup between famed coaches Johnny Orr (U-M) and Denny Crum (Louisville). In the first meeting at Crisler Arena on Dec. 7, 1977, the Cardinals pulled off an upset with an 88-85 victory. The following year at Freedom Hall on Dec. 6, 1978, Louisville survived with an 86-84 win.
It was 35 years until the next meeting, as U-M and Louisville would play for the 2013 national title. In a game of magnificent runs, the Cardinals were able to convert on two key possessions late to win the championship with an 82-76 victory at the Georgia Dome on April 8.
The two would meet again in the 2017 NCAA Tournament's second round at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on March 19, 2017. Led by Moritz Wagner's 26 points, the Wolverines advanced to the Sweet 16 after a 73-69 victory.
The Maize and Blue has played in 18 of the 20 Challenge series and holds an 8-10 all-time record; the Wolverines are 5-4 at home, 2-6 on the road and 1-0 at a neutral site.
Overall, the ACC has claimed 13 of the Commissioner's Cups and held on to the Cup for the third straight year despite the series ending in a 7-7 tie. As the rules state if the series ends in a tie, the Cup stays with the previous year's winner. Overall, there have been three ties -- 2012, 2013 and 2018. Â The ACC won 10 straight years when the series began in 1999 before the Big Ten rattled off seven straight (2009-15).
