2019-20 Photos of the Year: Jose Juarez
Michigan Athletics and Michigan Photography present the 2019-20 Photos of the Year! Starting July 21-24 and running through July 27-30, you will see what eight photographers from Michigan Photography deem to be their top images covering Michigan Athletics events in 2019-20, a year shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the words of the photographers, you'll read what can go into getting that perfect shot and just why they consider these to be the best of the best. Freelance photographer Jose Juarez continues our Photos of the Year by sharing some of his best images from the past year. Enjoy!
MAIZE HAZE
Michigan soccer fans fill the air with yellow chalk after the Wolverines scored a first-half goal in a 3-0 win over Cornell on Sept. 6 at U-M Soccer Stadium. “It's always fun to watch soccer fans celebrate a goal, especially since no fanbase of any other U-M sport celebrates this way. Michigan winning the game makes the day even more memorable.”

AMAZING, GRACE
Jack (second row, left) and Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh (second row, center) cheer after Jim's daughter, Grace, scored her first collegiate water polo goal in a 14-6 U-M victory over Iona on March 1 at Canham Natatorium.
“While I was disappointed that an Iona defender blocked my view of Grace scoring, I was happy to see the reactions of the Harbaugh family. I'm looking forward to seeing Grace develop her skills over the next three years.”

SHE'S A NAT-URAL
Natalie Wojcik leaps through the air on the balance beam during a Wolverine tri-meet victory over Washington and Texas Woman's University on Jan. 10 at Crisler Center. “This event looks easy to photograph but wound up being more challenging than I thought. I was so happy getting Natalie in midair, and I'm glad she has two years left to help me make great photographs.”

GETTING A LEG UP
Nicki Hernandez (center) is hugged by teammate Alia Martin (left) and gets a quick shoe shine from teammate Sarah Stratigakis after scoring a goal in a 4-1 Michigan win over Maryland on Oct. 27 at U-M Soccer Stadium.
“The women's team knows how to win, and they also know how to have fun. It's always a treat watching them play.”

BACKING THE MAIZE AND BLUE
Michigan women's basketball fans fill Crisler Center and cheer on the Wolverines during an 89-69 victory over Michigan State on Jan. 5. “This was my first time photographing the rivalry in women's basketball, and I had a lot of fun shooting it. It was very encouraging to see the support from the Maize and Blue community, and I'm sure the players felt that way, too.”

HOLD ON TIGHT
Goalkeeper Hillary Beall lunges to make a save against Notre Dame on Sept. 9 at U-M Soccer Stadium.
“Hillary was amazing again in goal, and the defense helped throughout the game. Usually, the goal saves keep happening opposite my side of the field, so I was grateful to catch this moment.”

LET THE CELEBRATION BEGIN
Chiara Lommer (right) is congratulated by teammate Giulia Pairone after winning a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the Wolverines' match over Central Florida, 4-2, on Jan. 26 at the Varsity Tennis Center. “I was nervous knowing that UCF was ranked in the top 15, but this U-M team quickly humbled me with its resilience. After capturing this moment, I learned never to doubt their talent again.”

YOU CAN'T STOP ME
Amy Dilk glides past Michigan State defender Taryn McCutcheon in the second half of an 89-69 victory on Jan. 5 at Crisler Center. “I'm happy to pick a second image from this game. Dilk was amazing and so was the rest of her team. I was convinced from then on that the Wolverines were more than talented enough to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.”

QUIT BADGERING ME
Nebojsa Popovic is grabbed from behind by a Wisconsin defender as he tries to pass the ball in the first half of a 1-1 draw on Oct. 25 at U-M Soccer Stadium.
“Nebojsa was a great scorer before he transferred to U-M, and I'm happy to see he brought that scoring success with him to Ann Arbor. Defenders have tried and failed to stop him, and I'll miss seeing him work his magic next season.”

RAISING THE BAR
Gabby Wilson swings on the uneven bars in a U-M tri-meet victory over Washington and Texas Woman's University on Jan. 19 at Crisler Center. “Gabby was the meet leader in this event. I thought she had the poise of a senior, but I didn't find out until later that she was only a freshman. With the rest of the squad being just as talented, the future is still bright for the gymnastics team.”
