2019-20 Photos of the Year: Sam Janicki
Michigan Athletics and Michigan Photography present the 2019-20 Photos of the Year! Starting July 21-24 and running through July 27-30, you will see what eight photographers from Michigan Photography deem to be their top 10 images covering Michigan Athletics events in 2019-20, a year shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the words of the photographers, you'll read what can go into getting that perfect shot and just why they consider these to be the best of the best. Freelance photographer Sam Janicki continues our Photos of the Year by sharing some of his best images from the past year. Enjoy!
CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF
“There were certainly a bunch of new Michigan men’s soccer celebration routines this year. The best, by far, was Nebojsa Popovic's.”

STRIGGOW SIDESTEP
“Jackson Striggow gets away from a shot attempt during the Wolverines' dual against No. 17 North Carolina on Nov. 8.”

----------------------------------------

LOOKING TO ADVANCE
“Sarah Stratigakis kicks the ball while the Wolverine bench looks on.”
----------------------------------------
SUNSET OVER OCKER FIELD
“The sky was pretty that evening so I knew I wanted to get a nice HDR (high dynamic range) photo. During the team introductions, I was able to get this great one with the added bonus of the block M on the scoreboard.”

----------------------------------------
TOP PICK
“This is my best ankle pick photo of the year. It’s fairly rare to get the wrestler (Joey Silva) doing the move towards you with his hand on the opponent’s ankle, eyes open, and a good view of ‘MICHIGAN’ on his chest.”

----------------------------------------
THE CHAMP
“Heavyweight Mason Parris wins the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 7. The lights in the background (especially the one shining right above Mason) make this one of my favorite hand-raise shots of the season.”

----------------------------------------

LION TAMER
"Kathryn Peterson celebrates after scoring a goal against Penn State. I love the fist in the air along with seeing the ball clearly in the goal behind the goalie."
GUADA'S GAME-WINNER
“Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort celebrates after scoring the game-winning goal against Maryland. It’s one of my closer-up celebration photos, so close that the wider angle of the lens made the netting show in the photo, which I like since it makes it seem like the photo is taken from right behind the goal.”
----------------------------------------
GLIDING TO THE BALL
“Samantha DeVecchi gracefully suspended in the air as she shows perfect focus on the ball.”

----------------------------------------
PIN, WIN, CELEBRATION
“The intimacy of Cliff Keen Arena means that there are always great crowd-reaction shots. My favorite this year was after Mason Parris’ pin in 29 seconds against in-state rival Michigan State.”
