ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by record-setting medalist James McLean, the University of Minnesota maintained its sizable lead and captured the 1999 Wolverine Invitational title Sunday, May 9, at the University of Michigan Golf Course. The Golden Gophers, who led Northwestern by 17 strokes after 36 holes, shot 288 in the final round -- tying the Wildcats for the low team round of the day -- and finished with a 54-hole total of 849 (three under par) to set a tournament record, surpassing Ohio State's record of 854 from 1998.
McLean, a sophomore, could not match his course-record 63 from the second round, but he shot a solid one-under-par 70 over the final 18 holes and posted a record total of 202 (-11), bettering his 1998 winning score of 204. Northwestern's Jess Daley and Minnesota's Martin LeMesurier also finished under par, with two-under totals of 211.
The host Wolverines moved up four spots -- from a tie for 12th to a tie for eighth -- by firing the fifth-best team score of the day (293). Michigan carded rounds of 299, 300 and 293 to finish with a three-round total of 892 and a tie with Iowa.
Michigan was led by All-Big Ten candidate Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS). Harris finished in a tie for 17th place with a 54-hole total of 220. Matthews tied for 22nd as he rebounded in fine fashion from his first-round tally of 80 with rounds of 73 and a career-best 68 to finish with a total of 221. Matthews' three-under-par 68 in the final round was the second-lowest score of the day, trailing only LeMesurier, who shot 67.
Others in the scoring lineup for Michigan included Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS), Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) and Brian Seipke (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City HS).
Four other Wolverines -- Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS), Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS), Kevin Hinton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) and Nick Lossia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) -- competed as individuals.
Michigan will conclude the season next week (May 14-16) at the Big Ten Conference Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.
