After he graduated, he played professional hockey for a short period, but college hockey was still his first love. His coaching career began at Michigan Tech where he turned the program from a 2-18 team his first year into an NCAA finalist within five years. In 1958, he returned to Ann Arbor as head coach, and for the next 16 years he led the Wolverines to 222 victories. Â Among those victories were five Big Ten titles, one WCHA crown and the 1964 NCAA crown.
