Though Bob Ufer began his Michigan athletic career as a freshman football player in 1939, he soon turned to the track for his athletic exploits. Four years later, the Pennsylvania native had set eight U-M records and the world mark in the 440-yard dash before his graduation in 1943. Ufer then traded in his spikes for a place where tenure never runs out, the broadcast booth. From 1945 when he first entered the WPAG broadcast booth to the 1981 Iowa contest when he retired, Ufer described 362 consecutive games in memorable fashion. His passion and enthusiasm for the game combined with legendary sayings made him the "Voice of Michigan Football." Famous for his colorful descriptions entitled "Uferisms," Ufer had the ability to inflict life into the simple games and make the unbelievable seem ever more so. Ufer succumbed to prostate cancer on Oct. 26, 1981, but not before touching the hearts of nearly every Michigan football fan with a rousing display of spirit at halftime of the 1981 Iowa game. This ‘Michigan Man’ will forever be part of "Meechigan" history.
