A leadoff hitter for the Michigan baseball team in 1924 and 1925, the second baseman from Blissfield, Michigan, not only had speed but was one of the finest defensive players in the Big Ten. He helped lead the Wolverines to the Big Ten Conference championship in 1924. Legendary coach Ray Fisher called Giles ‘one of the finest players he ever coached,’ and more 30 years later in 1956, Fisher was asked to name the all-time U-M baseball team in his 35 years as head coach, and Giles and Bud Morse were his second basemen. Giles not only was a great athlete, but he was an excellent student. He was the first Wolverine baseball player to be named recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1925 -- awarded annually at each institution to a student in the graduating class that has demonstrated proficiency in scholarship and athletics.
