Bump Elliott began his brilliant athletic career as a baseball, basketball and football player at Michigan. Fritz Crisler called Bump the greatest halfback he had ever seen. In 1947, he was the Big Ten's MVP and All-American as he led the Wolverines to the conference title, a victory in the Rose Bowl and a National Championship. His reverses, punt returns and pass catching ability made him the top scorer in the conference. As a coach, Bump contributed his knowledge and insight as an assistant at Iowa to help develop the Hawkeyes into Big Ten champions and Rose Bowl winners in 1956. In 1957, Bump joined Bennie Oosterbaan’s staff in Ann Arbor, becoming head coach two years later. For the next decade, Bump's record as head man of the Wolverines was 51-42-2, the highlight being a Rose Bowl victory in 1965 over Oregon State. After leaving the Michigan coaching job, Elliott went on to a successful career as Athletic Director at Iowa.
