A standout on the Michigan baseball team in the 1940s, Dick Wakefield was known for his exceptional power at the plate. As a sophomore in 1941, Wakefield hit nine home runs, several exceeding the 400-foot mark. He helped earn the Wolverines, led by legendary coach Ray Fisher, to the Big Ten title crown in 1941. Wakefield played just one season in Ann Arbor and became part of Major League baseball lore. Most baseball historians identify Wakefield as the first member of the group known as “Bonus Babies.” In 1941, the Detroit Tigers signed Wakefield from Michigan for an unprecedented amount of $52,000 and a new car.
