Michigan's first national champion wrestler, Ed "Don" George starred on the mat during the 1920s and '30s. A two-time AAU heavyweight national champion (1928-29), George lettered in 1926 and 1929 for the Wolverines. He won all-campus and state amateur wrestling titles his freshman year and later captured the Big Ten heavyweight crown in addition to his national trophies. In 1928, Ed qualified for the Olympic Games in Amsterdam and won his way to the finals where he lost a disputed decision. George turned professional after graduating in 1929, and one year later he defeated Gus Sonnenburg to win the World Championship.Â
