An end, Edward Frutig teamed with triple-threat halfback and Heisman winner Tom Harmon to become one of the most effective offensive threats in Michigan football history. Frutig, a steady player his first two varsity seasons, exploded in 1940 to lead the Wolverines in both pass receptions and pass reception yardage. His performance led to All-America, All-Big Ten and Eastern All-Star honors for the River Rouge native. Frutig graduated in 1941 and was a third round NFL draft pick by the Green Bay Packers. He played one season with the Packers before serving as a Naval flight instructor. Frutig closed his professional football career with the 1945 and 1946 Detroit Lions.
