Edward Schalon remains one of the most decorated competitors in the history of the Michigan golf team for four years under the coaching of Bill Barclay and Bert Katzenmeyer. During his time in Ann Arbor, Schalon was instrumental in the teams winning the Big Ten title in three of his four seasons, and his U-M teams finished second in the NCAA Championships in two of those years. As an individual competitor, Schalon captured two individual Big Ten titles in 1947 and 1949 and was an NCAA semifinalist. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950 with a B.S. in chemistry.
