Elmer Gedeon

An extremely versatile athlete, Elmer Gedeon is best remembered for his courage and the life he sacrificed for his country during World War II. A three-year letterman in football at Michigan, Gedeon mixed track and baseball his final two years, at times competing in both on the same afternoon. In 1938 and 1939, he captured Big Ten titles and set American records in the 70 and 75-yard high hurdles, and he batted .320 as a first baseman for the baseball team. In 1939, Gedeon signed with Washington and was playing the outfield for the Senators by the end of the season. In 1941, Gedeon was appointed to the U.S. Air Corps and served honorably in World War II, receiving Soldier's Medal for Heroism in 1943. Sadly, Gedeon was killed in action April 20, 1944.
