University of Michigan Hall of Honor

John Greene
- Induction:
- 1989
A standout for Michigan on the mat, John Greene was captain of the 1944 U-M wrestling team that captured the Big Ten Title. A Pittsburgh native, Greene also was a three-year letterman on the football squad and went on to have a decorated NFL career. A two-way performer early in his career, Detroit Lions coach Gus Dorais was so impressed by Greene’s speed he moved him from the line to receiver in 1945. The 6-foot, 215-pounder led the Lions in receiving from 1945-47 and ended his seven-year pro career (1944-50) as Detroit's all-time leading receiver with 2,965 receiving yards, 26 touchdown catches and 173 receptions.
