Marcus L. Plant joined the University of Michigan Law Faculty in 1946 and three years later was appointed to the Board in Control of Athletics. Professor Plant served for 30 years, from 1949 to June 1979 and during that entire time he served as the Board secretary. For 24 years, from 1955 to 1979, he served as the Faculty Representative of the University to the Big Ten Conference, the NCAA and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. During Professor Plant's tenure U-M completed the construction of Crisler Arena, selected Don Canham to serve as Michigan's athletic director and added six varsity sports for women.
