According to her field hockey head coach Phyllis Ocker, Mary Callam was called “the most talented player she ever coached." The 1979 season was a great year for Callam. She scored four goals against Grand Valley State and had three other three-goal games. In ‘79, she set season records in goals scored (27) and total points (62) that were not broken until 1997. From 1976 through 1979, she set career records for goals scored (64) and total points (136) that stood until 2003. The Bloomfield Hills High School graduate was also an outstanding student and was inducted into the M-Women Academic Hall of Honor in 1986. Her daughter, Eileen Brandes, was co-captain of the 2011 U-M field hockey team and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
