An All-American at Clarkston High School, Tim McCormick's 6-10 frame was expected to continue the recent success seen at U-M basketball games. He played all 30 games as a freshman, showing promise for the years to come, but a June operation to remove calcium deposits from both knees sidelined him for his entire sophomore year. He returned as a junior to average 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, reversing Michigan's sub-.500 record of the previous season. He played in all 28 games, shooting more than 55 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line. In his senior year, the center averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in a season where Michigan improved to 24-9 and a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten. For the first time in three years, U-M was invited to postseason competition, playing in the NIT. Though he only scored two points against Wichita State in the opening game, the senior averaged 19.3 points over the final four contests, including a 28-point effort that sank Notre Dame and gave U-M the tournament championship. For his efforts, McCormick was named the most valuable player. He was a first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1984 NBA draft and played for six teams over a nine-year NBA career. After recording more than 5,000 points for the Sonics, 76ers, Nets, Rockets, Hawks, and Knicks, McCormick went to the broadcast booth, where he is now the color analyst for Creative Sports.
