Virginia Duenkel (Fuldner)

Before she stepped foot on campus in Ann Arbor, Ginny Duenkel competed in the 1964 Olympic Games and captured a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle and a bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. Following her Olympic success, Duenkel went on to have two stellar years at U-M. She led Michigan to its fifth and sixth consecutive national championships at the NCAA Championships in 1965 and 1966. Duenkel personally claimed two titles in 1965; winning the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard freestyle. She repeated as the 100-yard backstroke national champion in 1966.
