ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team defeated Northwestern 1-0 to up its record to 14-4 (7-2 in the Big Ten). The win also pushed the Wolverines back into a tie with Penn State atop the Big Ten with one game left to play. Michigan can clinch at least a tie for conference championship with a win against Iowa on Sunday (Nov. 1).
Senior co-captain Amy Philbrook (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead HS) was the offensive hero for the Maize and Blue, scoring the only goal of the contest with 11:07 remaining in the first half.
Defensively, the Wolverines were outstanding, as Northwestern was allowed no shots in the first half and three for the game. Wolverine goalkeeper Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) recorded the shutout and now has six and a half on the season, just one shy of tying the all-time Michigan record set by Rachael Geisthardt in 1995.
"It was an exciting game for us," explained head coach Marcia Pankratz. "It was a 1-0 game and we played well, but it definitely made me nervous. We need just one more win (to claim at least as share of the Big Ten title)."
