CANCUN, Mexico -- Another balanced attack led the University of Michigan women's basketball team to a 104-49 victory over Coppin State in the opening round of the four-team Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol on Friday (Nov. 27) at Kuchil Baxal Arena. The win moves the Wolverines (3-1) into Sunday's (Nov. 29) 6:30 p.m. CST championship game to face Alabama-Birmingham, a 62-61 winner over Oklahoma in the other semifinal.
Eight players scored nine or more points for Michigan, including five who reached double digits. Freshman Raina Goodlow (Detroit, Mich./Dominican HS) led all scorers with a career-best 18 points in just 18 minutes of action, while Stacey Thomas (Flint, Mich./Southwestern Academy) added 16 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Others in double digits for the Wolverines were Heather Oesterle (Mason, Mich./Mason HS) and Mandy Stowe (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) with 12 each and Ruth Kipping (Quincy, Ill./Quincy HS) with 10. Three others added nine points apiece.
Michigan jumped out to an early lead against Coppin State (1-1) and led 53-30 at halftime after shooting 56.4 percent (22-of-39) from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Wolverines put the game out of reach with a 12-0 run to start the second half as Michigan held the Eagles scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half and led 67-32 with 13:47 remaining.
NOTES
• The 104-point output marks Michigan's first 100-point game since its 104-72 victory over Furman on 11/29/97 and matches the third-most points scored in a game in the history of the program.
• The 55-point margin of victory is Michigan's largest since the 1980-81 season, when the Wolverines defeated Windsor 126-60.
• Mandy Stowe tied her career scoring high with a dozen points, matching the 12 she scored against Furman on 11/29/97. She also pulled down a career-best seven rebounds, bettering her previous high of five.
• Freshman Ruth Kipping registered her first career double-double with career highs of 10 points and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes of action.
• Anne Thorius (Horsholm, Denmark) celebrated her 21st birthday by scoring her 300th career point. Her five points against Coppin State moved her career total to 302.
