MADISON, Wis. -- Five Wolverine seniors ended a successful era of University of Michigan volleyball with a three-game loss at No. 8 Wisconsin (5-15, 7-15, 4-15) on Saturday (Nov. 28). The Wolverines hit just .010 (26-25-100) while the Badgers hit .374 (48-11-99) to finish off the Wolverines in three games.
One night after setting a Michigan record with 33 kills, Karen Chase (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) was held in check and registered only five kills. As a team, Wisconsin out-blocked the Wolverines 13-2 for the match.
Freshman setter Shannon Melka (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis HS) came off the bench to lead Michigan in both assists (23) and digs (7). Sophomore middle blocker Joanna Fielder (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) led the Maize and Blue with seven kills.
Michigan seniors Chase, Linsey Ebert (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS), Jeanine Szczesniak (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley HS), Jane Stevens (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou HS) and Chereena Tennis (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood HS) finished off a career that included two postseason tournaments for the Maize and Blue.
