STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team opened defense of last season's Big Ten Conference Tournament title with a 1-0 victory over No. 4 seed Northwestern in a rematch of last year's title game.
The fifth-seeded Wolverines netted the decisive goal at 55:58 when Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) took a pass from Shannon Poole (Troy, Mich. Troy HS) and beat the Northwestern keeper to the far post.
Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) made three saves in goal in picking up her fourth shutout of the season and second in as many games.
The Wolverines raised their win total to 13 on the season, their second-highest to last year's total of 18. U-M improved to 4-1 all-time in opening-round action of the Big Ten Tournament and improved its all-time Big Ten Tournament record to 6-3.
Michigan advances on to the semifinals, where it will face the No. 1 seed and host Penn State on Saturday (Nov. 7) at noon.
