EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The 10th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell 3-1 to sixth-ranked Penn State in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament. With the win, Penn State became the first team in conference history to win four consecutive Big Ten Tournament titles.
The face of the game changed dramatically in the span of one minute. With the score tied at zero, the Nittany Lions scored the first goal on a penalty-corner play with 6:42 remaining in the first half. Just 52 seconds later, the Nittany Lions scored on a penalty-stroke on a controversial call.
Wolverine senior co-captain Amy Philbrook (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead HS) netted her 12th goal of the season with just under 10 minutes remaining to pull U-M back within one, but Penn State sealed the win on Dawn Lammey's goal with 1:59 remaining in the game.
"Penn State is a great team, probably one of the top four in the nation," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "We really felt like we played well enough to win the game, but some things didn't go our way. We are still hoping to make the NCAA Tournament, but we're on the bubble right now. I think we have a good enough team and the kids deserve it."
Wolverines Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), Ashley Reichenbach (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS) and Loveita Wilkinson (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) were all named to the all-tournament team.
Michigan will now have to wait to see if it receives a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Official pairings for the 12-team event will be announced Wednesday, Nov. 11.
