'M' Takes First at Sunshine Open, Crowns Three Champs

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team turned in another impressive performance, capturing the Orange Bowl Sunshine Open held Dec. 29-30 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Wolverines placed in the top five in nine of 10 weight classes and three U-M grapplers earned individual championships.
Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) earned his first championship of the season at 133 pounds, defeating John Marchette of the Augsburg College White squad in the finals. Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph Regional HS) earned top honors at 141 pounds, defeating a tough Don Waters from the U.S. Naval Academy. Andy Hrovat (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward's HS) continued his impressive freshman campaign by winning the 184 pound championship over North Carolina's Corey Bell.
Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) finished as the runner-up at 174 pounds. Other top Wolverine performers were: Chris Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS) third at 125 pounds, Corey Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) fourth at 149 pounds, Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) fourth at 157 pounds, Jason Rawls (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) fifth at 165 pounds and captain Frank Lodeserto (North Haledon, N.J./St. Joseph Regional HS) third at 197 pounds.
The Wolverines will travel to Hampton, Va., this weekend (Jan. 8-9) to compete in the Virginia Duals. The first opponent will be announced upon the team's arrival.
