Jansen, Ray and Feazell Named 'M' Tri-Captains

"Michigan captains are selected by their teammates on the basis of ability at their position courage, enthusiasm and outstanding leadership qualities," said Carr.
"The fact that the captains are voted on by their teammates makes it the finest honor a Michigan man can receive.
"Jon Jansen is smart, tough, determined and a proven leader as is evidenced by his selection as a captain for the second season, an honor that is rare at Michigan.
"Juaquin Feazell developed into an outstanding player in 1997. He commands the respect of his teammates because of his character, his determination and his great work ethic.
"Marcus Ray is a tremendous competitor who plays the game with great emotion and enthusiasm.
"The team has selected three men who love the game and love Michigan. I am confident they will provide outstanding leadership."
Michigan opens the season at Notre Dame, Sept. 5 (3:30 p.m. EDT, NBC).
NOTES: Jansen has made 37 consecutive starts (37 total) at tackle for the Wolverines, all 37 games that Lloyd Carr has been head coach ... Jansen, a candidate for both the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award, has earned pre-season All-American honors after he earned first team All-Big Ten honors in 1997 by the conference coaches and media ... Feazell, has played in all 37 games the past three seasons and has made 60 tackles in his career including 13 tackles for loss ... Feazell has made starts in each of the last three seasons including three in 1997.
Ray, a preseason All-America selection, has made 24 consecutive starts (30 starts in career)... Ray, a second-team All-American in 1997, has finished third on the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons, tops on the team in tackles by a defensive back ... Ray enters the season with 211 career tackles and nine career interceptions for 141 yards (ninth best interception return yardage total in Wolverine history) ... The selection of Jansen, Ray and Feazell marks the fifth time since Bo Schembechler introduced co-captains at Michigan in 1970 that tri-captains have been selected [1976 - Rob Lytle, Calvin O'Neal & Kirk Lewis; 1982 - Anthony Carter, Paul Girgash & Robert Thompson; 1985 - Brad Cochran, Eric Kattus & Mike Mallory; 1992 - Corwin Brown, Elvis Grbac & Chris Hutchinson; 1998 - Jansen, Ray & Feazell] ... All five times that there have been tri-captains, two were on defense and one on offense.
Jansen's selection as captain marks the ninth time in Michigan history that a player has been captain two seasons in a row, but only the sixth time in this century [1919-20 Angus Goetz; 1975-76 Kirk Lewis; 1981-82 Robert Thompson; 1984-85 Mike Mallory; 1995-96 Jarrett Irons & 1997-98 Jon Jansen] ... The three other multi-year captains were H.G. Prettyman (1884-85-86), the only three-time captain, J.L. Duffy (1887-88) and G.B. Dygert (1892-93).
