The Wolverines were on the board early as Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) scored at 2:19 on assists from Jessica Limauro (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) . Penn State drew even at the 27:58 mark when Bonnie Young broke in behind the Michigan defense and beat goaltender Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS).
Michigan dominated play in the overtime periods, outshooting the Nittany Lions 6-4, but some stellar play by Penn State keeper Emily Oleksiuk kept the score even.
