BALTIMORE, Md. -- University of Michigan women's tennis players Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) were upset in first-round main draw doubles action at the National Clay Court Championships at The Suburban Club of Baltimore County. The junior pair lost to South Alabama's Martina Ondrejkova and Iva Puflerova in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).
The Michigan tandem was ranked eighth in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association national doubles rankings released Sept. 15, while the South Alabama pair listed 47th. Last year, Hart and Lund formed the Wolverines' top doubles team, compiling a 17-13 overall record and finishing 25th in the ITA rankings. Hart and Lund made their first-ever NCAA Championships appearance in the doubles field at the 1998 national tournament.
Lund also competed in the qualifying singles portion of the ITA Clay Court tournament, losing in first-round action to Kentucky's Massoumeh Emami (6-2, 6-2).
The next competition for the Wolverine women's tennis program will be Oct. 16-18, as they host the Michigan Tournament at the U-M Varsity Tennis Center. The nationally competitive field includes North Carolina, Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
