LOOKING TO THE WEEK AHEAD
The Michigan women's soccer team will return home for a weekend of Big Ten action when it hosts Iowa on Friday (Oct. 2) and defending Big Ten champion Minnesota on Sunday (Oct. 4). Here is a brief look at the upcoming opponents:
Iowa: The Hawkeyes and the Wolverines will be meeting for just the second time. Iowa is in just its second year as a varsity program. The only meeting was a 4-0 Michigan victory Oct. 19, 1997, in Iowa City. Michigan holds a 1-0-0 lead in the all-time series. The Hawkeyes are 0-0-0 all-time in Ann Arbor. Iowa is 5-3-1 overall, 0-3-0 in the Big Ten coming into Friday's game with U-M.
Minnesota: The Golden Gophers and the Wolverines will be meeting for the sixth time. The last meeting was a 4-3 Minnesota victory Oct. 3, 1997, in Minneapolis. The all-time series favors the Gophers at 5-0-0. Minnesota is 2-0-0 all-time in Ann Arbor. The Golden Gophers are 5-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 in the Big Ten and play at Michigan State on Friday (Oct. 2).
LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK PAST
Michigan had a week which saw the Wolverines not ranked for the first time in 1998, after getting off to an 0-2 start in the Big Ten. The Wolverines opened with a hard-fought 1-1 double-overtime match with No. 7 Penn State on Friday (Sept. 25), Then took to the road on Sunday (Sept. 27) and picked up their first Big Ten victory, beating Ohio State 2-0 in Columbus.
Sept. 25 vs. Penn State: The Wolverines looked to climb back in the Top 25 and Big Ten race when-seventh ranked Penn State rolled into Ann Arbor. U-M wasted little time getting on the board as Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) scored 2:19 into the match. Penn State's Bonnie Young added the equalizer in the second half. After the Wolverines dominated the overtime periods, outshooting the Nittany Lions, the final score would be 1-1 after 120 minutes of action.
Sept. 27 at Ohio State: The Wolverines claimed their first Big Ten victory with a 2-0 win in Columbus over rival Ohio State. Jessica Limauro (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) remained red hot, netting both Wolverine goals. Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) registered her first point of the season after returning from a knee injury, assisting on one of the goals. Jessica Jones (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) played all 90 minutes in net, making four saves and picking up the first shutout by a Wolverine keeper in 1998.
BIG TEN CONFERNCE STANDINGS (through 9/27/98)
Jessica Limauro is making the most of her final year as a Wolverine. The senior leads the team in every offensive category: shots (26), goals (8), assists (4), points (20) and game-winning goals (3). Limauro now has 29 career goals and needs just three more to tie Ruth Poulin (1994-97) for the all-time lead in career goals at Michigan.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jessica Limauro became the first Wolverine this season honored by the Big Ten as their Player of the Week. Limauro was chosen based on her five points (two goals, one assist) against Penn State and Ohio State.
BACK IN THE POLLS
After a week out of the Top 25, the Wolverines used a 1-1 double overtime tie with No. 7 Penn State and a 2-0 win over Ohio State to climb back into the polls. U-M checks back in as the No. 24 ranked team in the country.
WOLVERINES AND OVERTIME
