ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The University of Michigan field hockey squad was beaten in a nail-biter by sixth-ranked Maryland, 2-1 in double overtime. It was the first of two matches the Wolverines will play in the first-ever Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) led the way for the Wolverines as she recorded eight shots and notched her second goal in as many games this season. Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) had another solid game as she stopped nine shots, but she was unable to stop the winning goal, which came on a penalty stroke in the second overtime frame.
Michigan put the pressure on the Terps in the first overtime frame, recording eight of their game total 16 shots, but the Wolverines were unable to overcome the goaltending of Maryland's Angela Platt. U-M will look to rebound Monday (Sept. 7) as coach Marcia Pankratz's club takes on a strong Wake Forest team before heading home.
