WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team's season-opening trip to the East Coast went as well as the Wolverines could have hoped as it dumped Temple in four games (15-8, 15-10, 14-16, 15-4) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 5) to go 3-0 on the weekend and claim the Georgetown Acumen Classic crown.
With solid play in all facets of the game, senior Jeanine Szczesniak (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley HS) led the Wolverine charge and was named tournament MVP. Joining Szczesniak on the all-tournament team was fellow senior Karen Chase (Orinda, Calif/Miramonte HS), who recorded 23 kills with an attack percentage of .432 (23-7-37) in the final match against Temple.
In addition, Anne Poglits (West Bloomfield, Mich./Livonia Ladywood HS) was also a major force at the net as she registered a career-high 17 kills. For the second time this weekend, Poglits delivered a attack percentage over .500 as she hit .552 (17-1-29) for the match.
Feeding Michigan's hitters up front was Alija Pittenger (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial HS), who collected 35 assists, the best of her young Wolverine career.
