Light Weights Carry U-M to Victory Over Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The 10th-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team defeated Wisconsin 28-11 to bounce back from Friday night's loss at Minnesota and up its record to 6-2 (1-1 Big Ten) on the season.

The meet began with the 165 pound match, and Wisconsin jumped out to the early lead by winning three of the first four matches. But momentum would change sides and the Maize and Blue took control behind the strength of its three lightest weight classes. At 125 pounds, Chris Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS) recorded his team-leading sixth technical fall of the season by downing Badger Kevin Black, 21-6. Viola is now 8-0 in dual meet action on the season.

U-M 133-pounder Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) and 141-pounder Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS) each followed with technical falls and the Wolverines never looked back. Corey Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) also highlighted the Michigan victory as he recorded one of his most impressive victories of the season, tallying a 6-2 upset of No. 14 Dusty Coufal.

Michigan, victorious in its last three meets with the Badgers, won the final six matches of the meet and took seven of 10 on the afternoon. The Wolverines now hold a 20-19-1 edge over the Badgers in the all-time series.

The Maize and Blue grapplers will return to the mat on Thursday, Jan. 28, by hosting Central Michigan. The dual meet is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
