Wolverines Defeat Western Michigan in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team defeated Western Michigan 6-3 in its home and dual match season opener. The Wolverines won four singles matches and two doubles matches to collect their fifth straight victory in a season opener (18-6 all-time in season openers). The victory also raised the program's winning streak to 12 straight against Western Michigan and its all-time record against the Broncos to 19-5.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 4-2 lead after singles behind victories from junior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS), sophomore Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium), sophomore Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy).
In doubles, Hart and junior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) defeated Larissa Chinwah and Mindy Champion by an 8-4 score at No. 1 doubles. The team's other doubles point came as Sinclair and sophomore Maya Canfield (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) combined for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Cyra Malik and Nicki Thompson.
The Wolverines will take three weeks off before playing their next dual match. Michigan's next match will be at Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m., followed by a match on Valentine's Day against Tennessee Sunday, Feb. 14, at noon.
