Diaz-Luong Earns Big Ten Conference Weekly Award

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan freshman gymnast Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week by the Big Ten Conference office for his performance in Michigan's win over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday (Jan. 23).
Diaz-Luong led the Wolverines to a winning team score of 228.475, blowing out the Flames (219.700). Diaz-Luong finished first in the all-around standings with a 56.950, including first-place honors on the pommel horse (9.750) and the vault (9.600), second place on the horizontal bar (9.750) and third place on the parallel bars (9.550).
Diaz-Luong's 56.950 all-around score is currently the nation's best. Along with his top honor, he ranks among the top 10 in three of six events in the nation.
With the contribution of Diaz-Luong's performances, the Wolverines have jumped from ninth place in the NAGC/M preseason poll to second place (228.475) in the latest rankings (Jan. 25) after two weeks of competition.
Michigan will host No. 4 Ohio State and No. 7 Illinois in the BMG Showdown on Friday (Jan. 29). Start time is 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
