Grapplers Dominate First Two Rounds of Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. -- The 11th-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team scored easy victories in its first two matches at the Virginia Duals on Friday, Jan. 8. The Wolverines upped their dual meet record to 2-0 with an impressive 46-(-1) victory over George Mason and defeated Lock Haven 40-3 to advance to the semifinals, where they will face No. 14 Oregon State, the meet's No. 2 seed, at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In the first-ever meeting between Michigan and George Mason, the Wolverines won 10 of 10 matches en route to the win. The 47-point margin of victory was U-M's largest since the 50-(-1) victory posted over Morgan State in 1988.
Leading the way for the Maize and Blue were Chris Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS), Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS), Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS), Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS), Corey Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) and Andy Hrovat (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards HS). Viola and Olson scored technical falls, while Warren, Logan, Grant and Hrovat scored major decisions.
The third-seeded Wolverines advanced to the second round to meet unseeded Lock Haven, which defeated No. 6 seed and 19th-ranked Rider in the first round, 21-19. The Wolverines won nine of 10 matches over Lock Haven to improve their dual meet record to 3-0 on the season. Michigan now holds a 3-2 all-time advantage over Lock Haven.
Viola and Olson were again impressive. Viola pinned Lock Haven's Mike Kusick at 1:30 and Olson recorded a technical fall over Adam Dimm by a score of 21-6. Also turning in an impressive performance were freshman 157-pounder Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS), and senior/junior 197-pounder Frank Lodeserto (North Haledon, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS). Martelli recorded a 12-4 major decision over Brian Olenek while Lodeserto tallied a 14-4 major decisioin over Avery Zerkle.
