ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team initiated its newly renovated Donald B. Canham Natatorium with a 141-102 win over the University of Florida on Friday (Oct. 15). The Wolverines posted their 32nd straight season-opening victory and are now 2-0 vs. the Gators after last season's 128-115 win. The Michigan and Florida women also went head-to-head in the co-ed meet, with the Gators coming out on top, 134.5-108.5.
The meet opened with the 400-meter medley relay, which Florida easily won in 3:55.05, but the Wolverines went on to win the next two events. Junior All-American Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS), the 1999 USA Swimming 1,500-meter freestyle champion, handily won the 800-meter freestyle in 8:14.61. Thompson is currently ranked third in the world in the 800 event (7:59.45). Against the Gators, Thompson also won the 400-meter freestyle (4:02.61), leading a 1-2-3 Michigan finish. Sophomore Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) finished second behind Thompson, with senior tri-captain Mike McWha (Windsor, Ontario/Kennedy Collegiate Institute) in third.
Among Michigan's individual winners was newcomer Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy). The 1998 prep school 100 freestyle national champion, Mangieri won his first collegiate event in the 200-meter freestyle (1:55.85). Fellow freshman Paul Ely (Beaverton, Ore./Sunset HS) won the closest race of the evening, out-touching teammate Eric Wilson (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) in the 200-meter butterfly by one one-hundredth of a second for another Michigan sweep.
On the diving boards, senior honorable mention All-American and tri-captain Josh Trexler (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) swept the springboards, winning the one-meter competition with 287.70 points and the three-meter with 326.40.
Coach Jon Urbanchek's Wolverines now have two weeks off before hosting Eastern Michigan, Oakland University and Michigan State on Oct. 29.
