ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Junior Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) scored a goal and assisted on another Friday night (Oct. 15) as the No. 14 University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated the Minnesota Gophers for the first time in school history, 2-0 in front of 741 fans at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Wolverines (11-3-1, 8-0-1 Big Ten) entered the game 0-6-0 against the Gophers (7-6, 5-4 Big Ten), including an 0-3 mark in Minnesota.
Michigan, one Big Ten win away from its first conference regular-season title, received solid goaltending from All-Big Ten candidate Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS). Stewart made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season and fourth in nine Big Ten Conference matches. Stewart, who became Michigan's all-time winningest goalie last weekend, set the school record for victories in a season with 11, breaking the record she had previously set in 1997.
Beitel got the Wolverines on the board first by depositing a pass from Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) at 20:19. Michigan created the goal off a corner kick opportunity. Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) sent the ball into play. Nancy Mather's (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster HS) initial shot was blocked, but the ball was collected by Peterson. Peterson passed it to Beitel, who finished off the play for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Michigan scored on its next shot to extend the lead to 2-0 when Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) converted a Beitel pass into a goal at 21:01. Crumpton's tally tied her with Beitel for the team lead in goals (eight). Beitel and Crumpton are also tied for the team scoring lead with 19 points.
The Wolverines close out their Big Ten Conference schedule on Sunday (Oct. 17) when they travel to Madison, Wis., for a noon CDT start against the Wisconsin Badgers.
