Up Next for Michigan
While most of the Wolverine men's cross country team will take this week off to prepare for the Oct. 30 Big Ten Championship, a small portion of the team will compete unattached at the Eastern Michigan University Open on Friday (Oct. 22) at Rolling Hills Park in Ypsilanti, Mich. The men's 8,000-meter race will start at 4 p.m.
Men Win Wolverine Interregional Title
The University of Michigan men's cross country team defeated No. 8 James Madison to take the Wolverine Interregional title in Ann Arbor, Mich., Sunday morning (Oct. 17).
Senior Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS) led the way for the Wolverines, taking the top spot with a time of 24:43. Michigan made in impressive showing, placing all point scorers in the top 20 of the race.
The title win marks the Wolverines' third consecutive Interregional title (1997, '98, '99) and third consecutive invitational title in the 1999 season.
Men's Notables
-- Jay Cantin continues to be the Wolverines' top finisher. After posting a 23:54 time at the adidas/Notre Dame Invitational and winning the Murray Keatinge Invitational, the senior was named the Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week for two consecutive weeks (Oct. 6 and Oct. 13). Cantin finished first overall at the Wolverine Interregional.
-- Senior captain Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) is still running strong. After placing second at the Murray Keatinge Invitational (Oct. 9), Lawrence was edged out of second place by three seconds to finish in third with a time of 24:57 at the Wolverine Interregional.

NCAA Cross Country Poll
The Michigan men's cross country team rose from No. 11 to No. 8 in the NCAA Division I poll for Oct. 19 after upsetting James Madison at the Wolverine Interregional (Oct. 17). Michigan is the second highest rated Big Ten team in the poll, trailing No. 5 Wisconsin.
