IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan field hockey team lost to Iowa 1-0 Sunday (Oct. 24) in a game dominated by defense. The loss drops Michigan's record to 13-5 (6-2 Big Ten), one game behind Iowa (15-1, 7-1 Big Ten) in the conference standings with two games remaining on the schedule. This was the second time the two schools played to a 1-0 decision this season. Michigan won the first meeting on Oct. 8 in Ann Arbor.
Michigan had plenty of chances in the game, tallying 19 shots, but was unable to score. The lone goal of the game was scored with 5:02 remaining in the first half off the stick of Lesley Irvine. Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) recorded nine shots for the Wolverines, outshooting the entire Iowa team by two.
Michigan goaltender Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) made just one save in the contest while Iowa's Kelli Drury made 11. Michigan had 12 penalty corners in the contest to Iowa's three, but despite the statistical dominance by U-M, it was not enough as Drury played an outstanding game in net to preserve the win for the Hawkeyes.
Michigan will return to action Friday (Oct. 29) when Penn State comes to Ocker Field. The Nittany Lions are 14-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
